Warning issued after high dose MDMA tablets found circulating in NSW
NSW Health said the batch was found to contain about twice the amount of MDMA commonly found in other ecstasy tablets.
The affected tablets are described as gray, irregularly shaped and have the text “LION” printed on one side.
NSW Poisons Information Center medical director Dr Darren Roberts urged people to remain vigilant and reminded of the risks associated with taking MDMA.
“MDMA can cause severe agitation, elevated body temperature, seizures or fits, irregular heart rhythms, and death,” Roberts said.
“Other risks include taking MDMA in combination with other stimulants, such as amphetamines or cocaine.
“The amount of MDMA in a tablet or capsule can vary widely, even within the same batch. The health risks of MDMA are greatly increased if large amounts (including multiple doses) are consumed in a short period of time.”
Roberts said hot environments like music festivals can increase the risk of serious illness or death.
“Hot environments, such as at music festivals, increase the risk of harm from MDMA,” he said.
“Taking a break from dancing, seeking shade and drinking water are important measures to reduce the risk of overheating.”
“It’s very important to remember that if you or a friend has taken drugs and you feel unwell, you should have no problem seeking medical help. If you or a friend feel unwell, please seek help immediately by calling Triple Zero.”
