There are many others online word games now, but I still run the New York Times Wordle play every day. These days, it’s not only an old friend, but also a nice warm-up for Connections, Strands and the rest.
In addition, we have ranks all letters in the alphabet by popularityif you want to use this list to choose your best opening words.
Daily Wordle Tips
I’ve written a lot about Wordle – from covering his 1000th word to my list of the best opening words to a useful two-step strategy to news about contradictory word changes. I’ve even rounded up what i learned playing the hit online word puzzle all year. If you’re rethinking your need for the actual answer, you can try advice from one of these stories.
Still need an opening word? One person told me that they just look around and pick a five-letter item they noticed as their opening word — like SOFA or CHAIR. I tend to stick to beginning words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN to begin with, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I have read these people use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words I actually know.
What is Wordle?
If you read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether or not the letters you guessed are in the puzzle, and whether they’re in the same place you guessed they are. New York Times buy the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner and let her narrow the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language down to just 2,500, creating the answer database. It was also convenient that he had a name that acted as a “word”.
A Times spokesman told me the first Wordle appears on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1000th word on March 15th. Spoiler: That 1000th word was ERUPT. As in “Dad’s going to explode if Wordle is so healthy he loses his streak.”
