Skeletal remains found near worksite in Queensland national park identified

Skeletal remains have been found at a roadworks site in the Central West Queenslandsparking a police investigation that led to a stunning, culturally significant discovery.

Workers digging a gravel pit in Loherne National Park near Longreach alerted authorities to the discovery of a human skull just after 2pm on Monday.

Police has launched an investigation but said further research at the site suggests it may have important cultural significance.

“The remains were examined by a forensic anthropologist and determined to be that of a pre-colonial First Nations man,” a police spokesman said.

“The remains were respectfully returned to the traditional custodian by the Iningai Aboriginal Corporation.”

Police Inspector Chris Smith had said earlier ABC West Queensland that the traditional owners will decide whether further excavation of the area will take place or whether the remains will be respectfully left to rest in the area.

“Representatives from the Iningai Aboriginal Corporation and others will assess the location at some stage today, weather permitting,” he said.
