Rainy and foggy start to summer as eastern Australia is battered by heavy downpour and low visibility
Rain drenched much of the east coast yesterday and the first day of December will bring some more rain before moving away tomorrow.
Most capital cities are forecast to experience rain again today, including a storm in Brisbane, while showers are forecast for Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
Sydneysiders woke up to a blanket of early morning fog today.
Heavy fog blanketed Penrith and the surrounding western suburbs, reducing visibility to less than 100 meters along the M4.
Drivers are reminded to use caution and turn on their lights.
The fog is not expected to disrupt flights at the airport and the Bureau of Meteorology said it should clear by mid-morning.
More rain, low cloud and low visibility could also cause disruption in Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane.
Heavy downpours and visibility below a few hundred meters could affect motorists in Brisbane on Monday morning, while Melbourne and Canberra experienced similar conditions this morning.
A severe weather warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for large parts of Tasmania this morning as heavy rain and damaging gusts of wind battered the state’s south-east.
The downpour may cause flash flooding in the region.
Six-hour totals could potentially reach 125mm, the bureau warned.
