North Melbourne hammer Brisbane in AFLW grand final domination

North Melbourne have rushed to their first AFLW Premiership with a dominant 30 point win Brisbane in the grand final on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos burst out with the first three goals of the first quarter and defended brilliantly to keep the Lions to just one goal in a 6.3 (39) to 1.3 (9) win.

The Roos controlled the game from start to finish, dominating the Lions in all key areas of the game.

The win completed a remarkable unbeaten season for the Premiers, the first in either the women’s or men’s history.

Dynamic duo Jasmine Garner and Ash Riddle combined for a staggering 65 touches, while captain Emma Kearney and Sarah Wright were also fantastic for the Roos.

Garner finished with 22 kicks and 13 handballs, as well as 13 tackles and 10 clearances to earn the best-on-ground award.

Alice O’Loughlin kicked three goals, two of which came in a devastating first season, while Vikki Wall chipped in with two.

Libby Burch also created some of the historybecoming the first woman or man to win three premierships for three different teams after previous success with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

“This is great. I can’t believe it,” Garner told Channel 7 after the game.

Captain Kearney, who missed half the season with a hamstring injury, was proud of her teammates.

“Super proud. It’s been a challenging year for me. I didn’t know if I was going to come back, I had a few more small muscle tears when I was in rehab,” she said.

“I was a little inconsistent in points during the season. So happy to play and play with this band with each other. We love each other so much.”

It was a disappointment for the Lions, who were looking to go back-to-back and join Adelaide on three premierships.

Belle Dawes, Ally Anderson and Orla O’Dwyer battled hard all night but had a host of stars who were well below their best, including Dakota Davidson who failed to register a touch in the first half.

North kicked the first three goals of the game to secure their triumph in a dominant opening quarter, building an early 17-point buffer with bigs from Tess Craven and O’Loughlin (two).

Ellie Hampson capitalized on a free kick down the stretch to score the Lions’ first goal and what turned out to be the only goal, but the Kangaroos led 4.1 to 1.2 at the main break with Kearney powering through the first half.

A quick Brisbane deficit was the only result of a torrid third term before a major from Wall extended North’s advantage early in the final quarter.

Trailing by 23 points, the Lions’ task became even more difficult when Ellenger had to be helped off the field with an ankle injury.

O’Loughlin’s third goal sealed the result and sent North Melbourne fans into party mode, celebrating their club’s first premiership in either the women’s or men’s competitions since their 1999 AFL triumph.

Brisbane’s loss was their fourth in six AFLW grand final appearances.
